The Mind-Body Connection: How are Mental and Physical Health Connected?

The differences between mental and physical health are extremely obvious: Mental health is responsible for the well-being of the mind and physical health focuses on the well-being of the body. Most people tend to believe that this means that they don’t affect each other. However, this isn’t completely true!

Although mental and physical health both are parts of the health triangle, the overlap of the two subjects aren’t always clear. Both areas of well-being are two sides of the same coin!

Poor Mind Equals Poor Body

Poor mental and emotional states can often be seen in the form of physical issues. For example, a weak mental state can heavily impact our immune systems and make us more vulnerable to disease and sickness. Stress releases hormones that suppress our immune systems, making it harder for our bodies to fight illness.

Poor mental health also makes us more susceptible to chronic diseases such as diabetes and obesity. This is because being mentally unhealthy makes it difficult for us to care for ourselves and often leads to the development of unhealthy habits such as poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle. Additionally, people struggling with mental health are statistically more likely to engage in smoking and substance abuse.

Strengthening our Bodies Strengthens our Minds

Just as struggling with mental health can lead to poor physical health, strengthening our bodies can also help improve our mental well-being.

Exercise: Physical activity not only reduces our risk of diseases like diabetes, heart disease and obesity, but also stress. It also improves mood and self-esteem. This is because exercise releases hormones called endorphins, which are responsible for relieving pain and making us feel happy.

Just as struggling with mental health can lead to poor physical health, strengthening our bodies can also help improve our mental well-being. Here’s three basic, but often ignored, aspects of health that can help us feel our best:

Exercise:

  • Reduces risk of disease like diabetes, heart disease and obesity
  • Improves mood and self esteem
  • Releases hormones, called endorphins, which are responsible for relieving pain and making us feel happy

Food and Nutrition:

  • A fulfilling, nourishing diet helps us manage stress and energy levels
  • A poor diet can weaken your immune system and cognitive ability
  • Your body also needs proper hydration to digest food, absorb nutrients, regulate body temperature and more!

Sleep:

  • 8 hours of sleep a night (depending on our age and needs of course!) helps us stay energized throughout our day
  • It also helps regulate metabolism, maintain healthy blood pressure abd our stress levels

Why Does This Matter?

Ultimately, we all want to live happy, healthy lives and a lot, if not all of us, make efforts to try to achieve this goal. However, if we don’t understand the connection between mental and physical health, we’ll never truly reach peak health. A healthy lifestyle is about balance. If one is physically fit and healthy, but is constantly mentally unwell, they’re overall well-being is impacted. Likewise, having great mental and emotional health, but a weak or neglected body also impacts a person’s overall health. Understanding the mind-body connection is necessary to achieving an overall well-being and by using it, we can live our happiest, healthiest selves.
